Runup to Expo2020Dubai – United Arab Emirates: legal, commercial and market approach aspects for the Agro-industry chain

The third session of “Information and Training 4.0” promoted by Lazio Region within the context of attendance to Expo2020Dubai was held on 31 March.
This digital meeting offered targeted information providing Lazio businesses those necessary tools to develop export and internationalisation programmes for the United Arab Emirates.

Due to the environmental and climate conditions of the United Arab Emirates, 91% of the surface is not cultivated (only 0.92% of total soil is arable). This means that more than 90% of all farming and food produce available on the market is imported. In total the agri-food industry is worth around €12bln (2020 estimate) in terms of import. The first exporter of food is India. Italy is in 16th position, with a total value of sales of around €197mln recorded between January and October 2020. 2019 closed with a revenue of €252mln. Italian products, including fruit and vegetables, are well positioned in the distribution chains with reference to the medium value to premium sector. Exports for HO.RE.CA. are on the increase with reference to organic and vegan products, homogenized foods and Halal meats, healthy options and nutrition for those practicing sports (sugar, colouring, additive-free, etc.); fresh cheeses as well as spreadable creams, chocolate, biscuits (medium price range).
