World Food Day

October 16, 2021 All day

World Food Day is celebrated every year worldwide to mark the anniversary of the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, commonly known as FAO, and was first established at the 20th FAO General Conference in November 1979.

Since then, the Day is celebrated every year in more than 150 nations to raise awareness on the problems of poverty, hunger, and malnutrition in the world, as well as on food security and the importance of spreading nutrient diets for all. The main objective is to encourage people to act against these problems at global level. Every year a particular theme is promoted which becomes the focus of all the activities.

Since 1981, World Food Day has adopted a different theme every year with the aim of highlighting the areas needing action and establishing a common approach. The 2021 theme is still to be announced although the FAO website suggests that it could be connected to the “need to support our ‘food heroes’ – farmers and workers in the agri-food supply chain – who continue to assure the passage ‘from farm to fork’, including in an unprecedented period of crisis such as that of the Covid-19 pandemic.”
