One hundred days to Expo Dubai

Lazio Region at the Italy Pavilion through footage by Oscar-winning director Salvatores

The Italy Pavilion’s web portal carries a section devoted to Italian regions attending the event and news from a range of areas

With 100 days to go until the opening of Expo 2020 Dubai, Lazio and other regions’ journey towards the Universal Exhibition is drawing close. This event represents the first large global happening after the pandemic.

Oscar-winning director Gabriele Salvatores has begun filming throughout Italy. The director was entrusted by the Commissariat for the participation of Italy at Expo Dubai to tell the story of beauty which is evoked in the very title chosen for our country’s contribution to the event: Beauty Unites People. In these weeks the Salvatores’ eye and team will cross the 15 regions displaying their cultural, landscape and historical assets in Dubai as well as their traditions and ability to innovate. Footage will be edited and shown during the exhibition semester – from 1 October to 31 March – to all visitors at the Italy Pavilion.

The story built by Salvatores with the participating regions entails highly spectacular and impactful content which will be visible in two different sections of the Italy Pavilion itinerary: the Belvedere, with all-round footage of landscapes and the most evocative places as well as the story of Italian know-how on a 100 square metre screen able to show visitors the best of our artisan take on agri-food, mechanics, design and the implementation of the most sophisticated technologies.

Expo 2020 Dubai is not only a unique event, but it also represents hope. After the pandemic, it is the chance to be able to look to the future with renewed optimism. It is an international showcase able to highlight the best of natural, artistic and historic beauty of the Lazio Region. This means not only Rome, which we are all familiar with for its immense heritage. It also means the sea, the mountains and especially all those municipalities in the provinces which often hide churches, museums and architectural jewels which deserve to be visited. Expo 2020 will also allow us to discover the force, the determination and the audacity of small and medium-sized producers in Lazio who create, invent and offer quality products throughout the world. Our desire is still that of marrying up tradition and innovation in a space where excellence is infinite. From agri-food to aerospace, from the culture of restoration to research, from cinema and audiovisual to design and crafts, from sustainable development to digital transformation. Lazio certainly has all the right features to once again attract visitors from all over the world, and world-scale initiatives such as this one do wonders to promote the desire to travel even more after the pandemic. It encourages us to come here and discover the thousand facets of this land”, says Nicola Zingaretti, President of the Lazio Region.

There are 100 days to go before the opening of the Dubai Expo! And I am touring the country filming for this project of ours aiming at representing our Italian know-how, the great and small wonderful things we are able to do with our hands: from gondola oarlocks to anchovy fishing, from hand-made tortellini to components for space satellites, not forgetting blown glass vases and the wines of Carso…and so much more! We are also documenting all this with cameras, drones and machines able to provide an all-round view of the infinite beauty of nature, culture and the history of our country. Looking at the projects of our Italy Pavilion, I am sure they will become something extraordinary. These imagined spaces and the materials used to create them are truly magnificent. I believe that all this is especially important as a Universal Exhibition is taking place in an Arab country for the first time. Our hope is that this too will contribute to a true exchange of knowledge and culture among the various peoples of this planet”, states Salvatores.

Thanks to the presence of no less than 15 regions – the highest number of regions ever recorded in a Universal Exhibition – Italy will be able to transmit the wealth and beauty of its land and knowledge in Dubai. The regions represented will be the artistic partners of the Italy Pavilion. They will contribute to creating content and animate the initiatives and events throughout the time of the exhibition from October to March next year”, stated Paolo Glisenti, Commissioner General for the attendance of Italy at Expo 2020 Dubai. “The presence of our regions will be crucial not only to launch tourism again – beginning with experiential tourism – but also to enable the interest of foreign capital to grow in the direction of local value chains, including consolidated industry and innovative SMEs, startups and artisans. The objective will be to attract the best talent and international skills towards the training offering available from our universities and research centres operating here”, he adds.

Gabriele Salvatores’ mastery will tell the story of Italian know-how, what I call living cultural assets. In the Belvedere installation at the Italy Pavilion of Expo Dubai we will feature the Italian landscape as you have never seen it before, 360 degrees-wide”, explains Artistic Director Davide Rampello.

A further section of the Italy Pavilion is devoted to Lazio and to the other 14 regions attending (the highest number ever recorded at a Universal Exhibition outside our country): this is a daily-updated space with content enriching the experience of Italian areas at Expo Dubai. It will transmit in a simple and intuitive way news relating to these regions and will enable visitors to look up our institutional webpages specific to the Universal Exhibition.
